NZ National Fieldays Society develops school environmental programme
5 December 2024
The New Zealand National Fieldays Society is excited to announce that it has been awarded a $40,000 grant from Waikato Regional Council to expand its Youth Environmental Education Programme at Mystery Creek Events Centre.
Launched just two years ago, the programme has experienced significant growth, increasing from one participating school to four local schools. Led by Janine Monk, the Society's Community & Sustainability Executive, the initiative has been supported by volunteers from organisations such as NIWA, Landcare Trust, Deep Dive Division, and local iwi, to name a few.
Supported by their teachers and support staff, the Programme offers students an engaging learning outside-the-classroom experience with interactive speaker sessions and activities run over two to three hours. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants often leaving inspired and having learned something new.
This funding has enabled the Society to hire an educational expert to further develop and deliver a curriculum for primary and intermediate-aged children over the next two years.
The programme supports the Society's three pillars: education, innovation, and globalisation, along with the values upheld by the organisation.
