Fieldays’ 50th anniversary celebrations begin

You can forget Fieldays week, 2018 will be known as Fieldays year with celebrations for the 50th anniversary set to begin next month. The calendar is action packed with anniversary books, functions, artworks and more announcements still to come. The first of these celebrations will take place this February with a cocktail style function held in Te Rapa, Hamilton, a tribute to the first ever Fieldays event held at the racecourse in 1969.

This June won’t just mark a milestone in Fieldays history, it also marks the 50th event for a number of organisations who have been with Fieldays from the very beginning.New Zealand National Fieldays Society CEO Peter Nation says there are a significant number of companies and organisations who have supported Fieldays from day one and a very special celebration is planned in a few months’ time. “When we look back it’s astounding how far we’ve come and a number of really special organisations and exhibitors have been with us every step of the way. This will mark a huge milestone for our Society and everyone involved. Not many people can say they’ve committed to something for the last 50 years” said Nation.

Fieldays will also hit the road later in the year for a parliamentary opening and a Fieldays roadshow.Major Event Manager Lee Picken says it has been a remarkable journey and the roadshow will tell the stories of New Zealanders who have been part of the ride.

“Fieldays draws people from all over New Zealand and the globe, it’s the largest agricultural event in the Southern Hemisphere and every person we talk to has a story. It’s astounding when you think of all the lives Fieldays has touched” said Picken.

The roadshow will see Fieldays visiting rural communities before ending up at the pinnacle event at Mystery Creek 13-16 June. Picken says preparations for the event started 18 months ago but it’s getting to the pointy end now. “We’re less than five months out from the actual Fieldays event and preparations are in full swing. It’s such a huge milestone for any event and we’re working in overdrive to make this the best one yet” said Picken.

Agricultural businesses are also on board to make this event the best yet with an unprecedented number of applications for sites at Fieldays 2018.Nation says they have been overwhelmed with demand for the milestone event.“We anticipated increased interest this year but what we have received has been massive, it’s totally exceeded our expectations”.

With Fieldays sales a key event on many agricultural businesses calendar, organisers are focused on continuing to grow the event and staying at the forefront of agricultural innovation.Next month’s cocktail celebration is just one highlight in a year of activities to mark Fieldays 50th anniversary.
